Pharmacy and Lab Services

Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic’s pharmacy offers a full line of prescription medications, including parasite preventatives, prescription food, and veterinary supplements. Our in-house laboratory includes equipment and instruments to test urine and fecal samples, run complete blood counts and comprehensive diagnostic blood work, and perform ear and skin cytology.

In-House Pharmacy

All of the medications, food, and supplements dispensed from our in-house pharmacy have proven to be safe and effective and are guaranteed by each manufacturer.  You may request refills with your PetDesk app, on our website, or by calling us.  If your pet has been seen by one of our veterinarians during the past year and any required diagnostics have been completed, most refills will be ready for pick up within 24 hours of your request.  However, please note special order medications typically require a week’s advance notice.  And, because we know pet parents lead busy lives and sometimes don’t realize their supply is running short, we can usually complete an “emergency” refill request within four hours.  For a nominal fee, we’ll ship most medications and supplements to your home so don’t hesitate to request this option if it’s more convenient for you.

Vetsource Online Pharmacy

In addition to our in-house pharmacy, Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic is proud to provide access to our online pharmacy. We’ve partnered with Vetsource, the industry-leading home delivery pharmacy provider, to offer you this convenient service at competitive prices. If you use online pharmacies, we encourage you to purchase your pet’s prescription preventatives, medications, and diets from Vetsource for several reasons. When you do, the purchase is automatically documented in your pet’s medical record, and the product’s guarantees stay intact. In addition, Vetsource receives the product directly from the manufacturer and makes sure it’s packaged and shipped properly to you. That’s not always the case when you buy online without a direct veterinary relationship at sites such as 1-800-PetMeds, Fosters & Smith, and other internet sources.

Our Vetsource online pharmacy works with us to make sure your pet receives exactly the medications he or she needs – from a trusted source, and with their convenient AutoShip option, standard shipping is FREE on most orders. Whether your pet needs medication for a chronic condition, pain management, parasites, or as a nutritional aid, please visit our online pharmacy today to make sure your pet remains healthy and happy for years to come.

Lab Services

Laboratory tests are used to diagnose a wide range of pet health issues. This includes anemia, liver and kidney dysfunction, heartworm and tick-borne diseases, diabetes, infection or inflammation of the urinary system, intestinal parasites, ear and skin infections, and suspicious growths or tumors.

BRVC uses top-of-the-line veterinary lab equipment to perform complete blood counts, comprehensive diagnostic tests, and check glucose levels. Results are available in less than 15 minutes which allows our doctors to review findings during appointments or before surgery.  We work closely with a local commercial veterinary laboratory or university veterinary labs when we’re checking thyroid, endocrine and additional liver functions, infectious diseases including leptospirosis, Ehrlichia and Lyme, and parvo and distemper vaccine titers.

Our in-house urinalysis equipment helps BRVC’s doctors identify infection or inflammation, kidney function, diabetes, and the presence of bladder stones. Cultures and other more complex urine diagnostic samples are transferred to a local commercial veterinary laboratory twice daily and results, with the exception of urine cultures, are typically available within 24 hours.

BRVC’s veterinary technicians have been trained to detect intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia, in fecal samples and can provide results within 15 minutes. We also use a local commercial veterinary laboratory to process routine samples with results returned to us within 24 hours.

Biopsy and Cytology

Cytology for ear and skin infections and fine needle aspirates of suspicious growths are also completed in-house so that any medications needed to treat the symptoms can be dispensed before you and your pet leave the clinic. From time to time, our doctors may decide to send samples to a board-certified pathologist to confirm their findings.  Samples of tissue, bone, and organs removed during surgery will also be submitted to a board-certified pathologist for analysis followed by a written report that will be shared with you once received.
