The New Year is a good time to reassess healthy habits – especially for your pet! Our veterinarians recommend these five resolutions to keep your four-legged friend in tip-top shape!
- Spay or neuter at an age that is appropriate for your pet’s breed and lifestyle. Our doctors recommend most puppies and kittens be spayed or neutered between 6-8 months of age because of the health and behavioral benefits. However, we recognize there is some scientific evidence that delaying spay or neuter surgery for large breed dogs may be beneficial. We’re happy to discuss the benefits and risks of this surgery as it relates to your dog’s breed and lifestyle to help you make a decision.
- Prevent obesity by measuring food, counting treats, and moving more. With an estimated 60% of cats and 56% of dogs in the U.S. classified as overweight or obese, the pet obesity epidemic continues to grow. By feeding measured meals and not sharing table scraps, you can put your pet on a healthier path. Regular exercise is also important, so enjoy more walks, play fetch, or pick up a feather toy to entice your cat to play. Not sure how much to feed your pet? We understand that some dogs and cats may need a little help achieving and maintaining a healthy weight so we offer a complimentary pet weight management program for all of our patients.
- Reduce the risk of your pet becoming lost by having a microchip implanted. Microchipping is the most reliable and permanent form of identification for your pet. Our veterinary care team members complete all of the registration paperwork for you. You’ll receive a customized tag including the microchip number but you must make sure your contact information is kept up-to-date! We recommend puppies and kittens be microchipped during spay or neuter surgery but a chip can be implanted at any time so pet parents never have to face the heartbreak of losing a beloved family member.
- Frequently groom Fluffy or Fido’s coat and nails. Routine brushing helps control shedding and prevent mats, and gives you an opportunity to examine the skin for any abnormalities. In addition, regularly scheduled nail trimming can prevent injury to you or other household pets. Set aside some “spa” time each day to pamper and bond with your four-legged friend.
